The ‘sestercentennial’ (250th Anniversary) of the world’s first freedom of information (FoI) law in Sweden, is being marked across the world, including in London and here in Scotland. Most celebrations take the form of discussions on the current state of FoI. Now over 100 countries have a ‘right to access information’ law.

Campaign calls on Parliament to throw out ‘confusion and dilution’ of FOI rights

The Campaign for Freedom of Information in Scotland (CFoIS) today called on Scotland’s MSPs to reject Scottish Government proposals to give grant-aided and independent special schools three times longer to respond to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests than public schools. The Campaign says these changes endanger both the principles and effectiveness of Scotland’s much-respected Freedom of Information law.

Weakening FOI rights with threats and excuses

The current Westminster Freedom of Information (FoI) law is under threat, and here in Scotland a long-promised consultation on extending the law looks like ignoring demands to restore public services to accountability. At the British level, there have been a series of direct threats to FoI from both government ministers and official practices.
